Tom. It was fairly hot in school, wasn't it? Yes, ma'am. It was really hot, wasn't it? Yes, ma'am. Didn't you want to go swimming? Tom? A bit of a scare shot through Tom. What was his aunt trying to find out? He searched Aunt Polly's face but had told him nothing. So he said, no, ma'am. Well, not very much. The old lady reached out her hand and felt Tom's shirt and said, but you aren't too hot. Now, she felt proud of herself. She had quite cleverly found out that the shirt was dry without anybody knowing what she was actually trying to discover. But for all her cleverness, Tom knew what she was trying to do now. So before his aunt could ask about his wet hair, he himself explained the situation to her. Some of those poured water on our heads to stay cool. My hair is still wet. See, Aunt Polly felt frustrated to realize she had not thought of that excuse. Then she had a new idea, Tom. So you didn't have to take your, your shirt collar where I sewed it to pour water on your head. Did you unbutton your jacket? Tom? Remained calm. He opened his jacket, his shirt collar was securely sewed. Bother. Well, go along. Then I was sure you had skipped school and gone swimming. But I forgive you Tom this time. I suppose you're a nicer person than you. Look, she was half, sorry that her plan to catch Tom Red Handed had failed. But she was also half glad that the boy had actually done the right thing for once and stayed in school. But Sid, who had been quietly listening to the conversation said, well, now didn't you sew his collar with white thread? But it's black. Now why I did sew it with white Tom. But Tom did not wait for his aunt's punishment as he escaped out the door. He said, Sid, I'll hit you for that.
