Usually dad and mom let me stay up until midnight on weekends. As long as I read or do something constructive like homework boring. But yesterday was Monday and after that chocolate ice cream bar disaster. Last night, I was exhausted at school. During science class, my tired eyes were glued shut for the 1st 20 minutes. Not a good way to start the day. Does anybody have any toothpicks? I said under my breath between yawns, I need something to keep my eyelids open. Amy Marie who was seated right next to me, tossed two paper clips onto my desk. Want to use these. She smiled and tipped the brim of her baseball cap as if to say, you're welcome. Thanks. I whispered, trying not to lose class participation points. Ames. That's Amy Marie's nickname seems pretty cool. Last week, Mr Green, our science teacher asked Nutty and me to be her dissection partners during the science lab. I really liked working with her because she wasn't squeamish about the formaldehyde solution. Other girls gagged when they smelled the slimy liquid used to preserve dead animals. Ames put her face right up to the pinned frogs, sliced them in half poked at their guts and smiled. Mr Green was the most popular teacher at Riverdale Middle School. Everybody knew that he drank lots of coffee to stay awake because he was a science teacher by day and a rock and roll musician by night. Rumor had it that he wore a band t-shirt underneath his dress shirt, but nobody knew for sure. He kept a coffee maker in the science lab next to our classroom and sometimes he disappear for a few minutes in return with a steaming hot mug of liquid energy class said Mister Green. As you know, we'll be putting together our projects for the science fair. You'll need to do research, collect supplies and decorate a poster board. If you haven't already, you'll also need to decide on a topic and choose partners. The sign up sheet is on the door. You'll be working together in groups of two or three and you'll be graded as a team. Ames tossed another paper clip onto my desk and smiled. Let's be partners as long as it's something gross and messy you can count me in. She seemed a bit creepy yet. I kind of liked that about her. Ames always wore a baseball cap with her blonde hair pulled forward in braids and two inch high sketchers. Maybe she was trying to make up for being the shortest one in seventh grade. I'd seen her sitting by herself sometimes at lunch and wondered if she had any friends. Sorry. I said, Nutty and I already signed up to be partners. Nutty was sitting on the other side of the room so he couldn't hear our conversation. But didn't you hear him? Ames asked? Mr Green said we could work in teams of two or three. We could be a science fair trio. I didn't know what to say. Um, maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea. Well, I don't see why not. But first let me ask, Nutty. Great Ames gave me a thumbs up. She was acting as if I'd said yes. Actually, I wanted to say yes. Half of me felt nervous because I hadn't asked nutty. But the other half was excited. She wanted to be on our team. We'd had so much fun dissecting frogs last week and I was really hoping that Nutty wouldn't mind. You'll be happy to know Mr Green spoke in a loud voice, redirecting everyone's attention to the front of the class. That one of the judges for this year's science fair will be a journalist from River Valley magazine. She'll be choosing three student projects to be featured on the cover of the magazine so your ideas could be showcased in next month's issue. Remember, creativity is important when the bell rang for lunch. Nutty said he'd meet me at the cafeteria. I waited until everybody had left the room except for Mister Green and walked to the front of the class
