long ago in Japan, there was an old man who made his living by cutting stalks of bamboo and making clever and useful things out of them. He and his wife had a difficult and lonely life. Life was difficult because although he worked hard, they were very poor. It was lonely because they never had a child to bring some light and liveliness or even something unexpected into their days, weeks and years. Then, late one afternoon, as the forest grew dim, the old bamboo cutter noticed a strange stalk of bamboo glowing down near the route. He leaned down to examine it. Inside the hollow bamboo was a tiny girl, no more than three inches tall, the bamboo Cozza said to himself. Since I am the only person who would be here right now, cutting this bamboo, this little child must be meant for me and my wife. He carried her home cupped in his hands as you would carry a baby bird. The bamboo cutter and his wife was so delighted with the child they could hardly take their eyes off her. He would hurry home from the forest in the middle of the day just to see her. Sometimes late at night, his wife would rise from bed in order to look at her. Even the Children from neighboring houses played in the bamboo cutters garden, hoping for a chance to see the tiny girl. The old man made a basket for her to sleep in, but she outgrew the basket very quickly. In fact, she grew as quickly as bamboo itself, and within three months she was fully grown.
