Welcome to episode 13 of level up. Lore exploring tales, legends and stories passed down and shared from your favorite video games. Today we continue exploring the world of elder scrolls and the continent of tam Rio. This time we move south from the Dragons of Skyrim to the Imperial province of Syria until the backdrop for the first elder scrolls game to debut on the seventh generation of gaming consoles in Oblivion, initially released in March 2006 for xbox 3 62,007 for Playstation three. Like previous elder scrolls titles, the game was met with high praises from fans and critics alike. As is traditional with elder scrolls games, a player can form their own narrative and character, ensuring that no two play throughs are like one of the most memorable choices a player can make is to fall into service of one of the darkest and most notorious organizations in elder scrolls canon and serve one of the most charming characters in the whole series. Today we dive into the story and the hunt for one of Oblivion is most infamous characters. Vicente Voltaire, I'm your host, Jaime the game urgent and when Monsters are about, the best you can do is wait for Dawn Sheriff Sheriff Sheriff Sheriff, wait by the Divines. Sheriff, where are you going By the Divine's woman. Can a man not have a single moment of peace around here, I hear no bell, no screams of terror, no monster at our gates or horde of marauders climbing over our walls, but Sheriff, what's to be done about about? What Have I not been serving this town for over 20 years. Have I not kept us safe from all manners of threats? I feel as though I have earned a little rest and reprieve for one night. What? The vampires? I will answer three questions about the vampires. Three questions. I am tired. Believe me, I am doing my best to stop this and will continue to do so. But even I need rest. So. Three questions. Is it true that a vampire can be defeated by stakes made of holly? No, will swords and arrows work against them? No. Then, what are we supposed to do? Lock your doors, board your windows. Wait for dawn at all. I promise to you, I am doing all I can. I am saving enough coin to hire a mage, will come and put spells on our town to protect us. But the journey is far and people willing to barter for goods on the road are few. I know times are dire, but please have patience and hold strong, Sheriff. We have weathered storms, bandits, and even a werewolf. We will find a way to overcome these vampire attacks as well. But please give me time to to devise a plan. Let me rest. I promise I will answer more of your questions tomorrow. Yes, sheriff. Good night. Stay safe! Good speech! Well, going to strike me down with your blade. Nice chair, By the way, very cozy. You make it yourself. You you're an intruder. You should fix better locks on your windows by the way very easy to open up your you're an elf. Very perceptive. I um I I apologize for my outburst. Thank you. But it's perfectly understandable to instinctively kill a stranger in your house. I'm actually surprised you taking my presence so well, I've always wanted to meet an elf contrary to believe. Not all of us hate you folk. My husband, A friend of mine spoke very highly of your folk. Well, I suppose you're wondering why I'm here breaking into your house. I assume you broke in to avoid any suspicious townsfolk. But well, if you heard me outside, are you here because of the vampire attacks? You're correct. Sounds like we'll both need some tea. I appreciate the hospitality here. The least I can let you do is have your seat back. Thank you. So, tell me, what does a wood elf have to do with this series of vampire attacks that plague my town. It's not so much. The attacks was why I'm here. I'm not even here for your town. Although count yourself lucky. No, it's not all the vampires that I'm here for. Just one in particular. Descente val terry. Who 100 year old vampire? I followed his trail for many years but lost him some time long ago. The attacks that have befallen your town are the best lead I've had in months. If we interfere with these attacks, they can lead us back to Voltaire and end him. Tell me more about this Voltaire, there's no time for an explanation. Night is almost upon us. We need to immediately begin preparing for The defense. Is the best defense against anything is knowledge. I'd like to know exactly who is threatening my town and my people listen Sheriff. If you we have time and we have tea. I may not know much truth about vampires, but I am wise enough to know when I'm out of my depth and the importance of knowledge before action. So, tell me more about this interval Terry very well, Sheriff. Good brew. Thank you. Please get on with it. Terry is, or was a Britain. He was an agent of High rock. From dagger Fall as part of the ravenous taking of the country, respected by the generals for his clandestine successes, and loved by the nobility, for his charm and wit. Val Terry was well off in a cushy mansion With the aristocrats seize power. Over 300 years ago, he was on an expedition to morrow wind what his assignment was, I cannot say for certain, but from his trail of blood, I guess it was assassination, sabotage, or blackmail on behalf of dagger fall. But what I do know for certain is his mission went awry, his perfect and spotless record in service to his kingdom. Finally came to an end. It was his own arrogance and zealousness that doomed him. from what records I found, he tried breaking into a fortress near the city of said Janine. All terry alerted the garrison, but instead of aborting their mission, he chose to press on alone, leaving his fellow britons to hide from the dog soldiers. But he was their leader and without his guidance, the four guards caught his compatriots and slaughtered them all. He left his men to save himself in a way he actually continued the mission. I think he succeeded too. I broke into the fourth myself. More wind Guards are so dim witted and Volterra is either an idiot or thought himself invincible to be thwarted by them. I guess he's a little bit closer to invulnerability now. But according to records from the ford, he escaped with some relics. It was a great loss to the men at the fort as well. The entire garrison was dishonorably commissioned for their failure. And what did he do after? He slowly made his way back to High Rock. I have to assume his government left him for dead. Otherwise a ship or a crew would have come to pick him up. Probably get a hero's welcome to praise for his deeds once more, but it was his abandonment that led to his vampiric affliction. Somewhere on his journey back he contracted the disease. Most likely when he was passing through fall grief for some traders said that vampires run rampant there and it's one of the quickest ways back to High rock mo and there's not enough evidence to know exactly what transpired. Came down with the illness and a trail of bloodshed followed suit town after town. String of vampiric attacks marked his pack back to High Rock. Each record starts the exact same way a suave and charming Britain asked for a room with the in a handsome Britain with precious cargo. Was willing to trade. A Britain helped the share reward off a vandal. He didn't so much walk back to hierarchy. Did charm, steal connive and devour his way back from what I can piece together from the records from the town smoke. He ravaged. It took him about two years to make his way back to High Rock waste of time for him. Didn't really know what he expected. Usually when you're left for dead, suddenly reappear, People are never quite as welcoming as you'd expect something, you know from experience, you don't become a lifelong vampire hunter without some close calls and ruining some important relationships worth it. Most of the time. Most things worth chasing are, do you want to hear more about military or keep being fatherly continue? So here's military strolling into High Rock After two years. Missing laden was stolen relics from a different nation and a vampire luckily if lucky can be used to describe the situation signs of vampirism, don't show if a vampire has feasted on a human recently enough. But while terry became swept up in debriefings hearings and answering the questions of the families of his slain comrades during the Bureaucratic mess military was under a lot of scrutiny. Constant surveillance makes it hard to go out in the night slit someone's throat and suck the blood out of the jugular. The inevitable happened after not feeding for too long. His vampirism came to light, sullen cheeks, pale demeanor, bloodshot eyes, general creepiness aside. His secret was out under the investigation of his own government already. People even accused him of killing his own comrades back in Maryland. And so came the fall of high Rocks. Favorite son, now a traitor, a deserter and a vampire. He was thrown away into a dungeon, but a centuries old Dagga for reckons can be believed he actually tried to feed on his jailers. They imprisoned him. He succeeded to split his neck open with his teeth if I remember the transcript correctly by the Divine's messy business. Indeed, folks of dagger Falls city are no strangers to vampires. Clan by the name of breath was home to some stray vampire fledglings who caused some chaos in the city. The guards knew what to do with Val Terry. He spent the better part of a decade in there. Below the city rotting away enough to never be a threat and alive enough to suffer. That's the best way to keep a vampire in prison only give it rats blood, nothing human keeps them weak and I'm assuming he got strong enough to break out. Well, remember those clan folk I mentioned earlier, like any clandestine organization, They have someone on the inside. There's no official record as to what actually happened. But one day for his lunch, Bill Terry was at full strength. He broke his chains and attacked his guards, making him escape. I have to believe he smuggled some human blood just enough to bring him back to strength. His outbreak was swift and kept quiet as to not cause alarm in the city. Not the best. Look, if one of your greatest secret agent is publicly shamed for treason, vampirism and murder needless to say. He fled before he fled the whole of High Rock from their records, One of mouth and evidence. His hunting trail gets a bit messy. He may have spent some time in Skyrim, but eventually made his way to Sayreville there. He had a run in with the thieves guild and the Gray Fox. The thieves guild. They're real. Don't get out of your village much, do you? Most of the scary rumors about shadowy organizations you hear are true. What do the thieves guild have to do with vampires? Nothing usually. But they have something to do with another organization. One that led to the recent attacks on your village. How familiar are you with the Gray Fox? Only heard tales of him wears a mask steals things. Makes a game out of it more or less true. What's not included in most of the tales is that it's a mantle passed down from one kleptomaniac to another. The mask is what matters. Not so much the person behind it. Anyway, Terry had found his way into another village, this time becoming the baron of the town. Eternal youth mixed with natural charisma as a way of getting you into powerful positions. It was almost like he had his own life back, except with, you know, he now needed to murder people and drink their blood. Well, Terry built his small town near a crossroads, but tradesmen and travelers alike would frequent his town became well known for its hospitality and military would personally invite someone to stay at his manor and in the middle of the night he'd feed on them, apportioning out their blood to save for a rainy day. No one caught on to him, and it seemed that he finally had a perfect system for living amongst normal society or concealing his vampirism. The townsfolk actually spoke very highly of him, saying he was a fair and more importantly, handsome and charming lord. That is, until his cover got blown again. Everything was going along smoothly for him. Until one day one of his guests just happened to be a gray fox must have been a surprise also to the villages in val Terry, as you probably guessed. The gray fox went snooping around at night, no doubt hunt of some areas, converted artifacts when he stumbled upon his bloodletting room. His what room? His blood is torture and murder. Right, discovering such a macabre scene would terrify anyone. Even a master thief. Instead of stealing a priceless artifact, the gray fox stole all the blood had stashed away, smashed. What else he couldn't carry, destroyed the room made such a racket. The whole town woke up, and obviously military who came bursting down and chased a gray fox out with murderous intent, caused quite a scene. The scuffle between the two of them folks. I talked in the town, reached a few stalls and a stable being nearly obliterated in their fight. Who knew a thieves guild master could go toe to toe with a vampire lord in single combat. All Terry had no choice, but if the townsfolk sent a carrier to the Imperial City to ask the aid, not even Val Terry could compete with the forces of the Empire. So naturally he fled again. Is this all this man's life is vying for power, and then fleeing bad summary of it? But what would you expect once a man has gotten used to a certain level of comfort, you do anything in his power to keep it that way, or get it back? Once an aristocrat and always an aristocrat, it just takes the right environment to settle in. And did he find the right 1? Did he ever, shortly after the incident with the Gray Fox, he went on another rampage, his bloodiest yet stripped away a comfortably normal life? A second time must have been too much for him. He finally seemed to embrace in vampirism, terrorizing travelers towns, even some of the well protected aristocrats of larger cities. Angry, hurt, lashing out. Sloppy work, though, made it easy for me to follow his trail. I almost called him once or twice when he linger in some towns for longer. When was this? About 80 years ago or so, 80 years. Give or take? A few years. This was the closest I got to putting an end to him when he was at his most careless, but also most brutal. But then what happened? It was in White Run Skyrim killed so much. Almost all of Syria. Deal was on alert for vampires. He feasted on his simple stable hand. Bloody dirty, horrifyingly effective. I was about a half day behind him at this point, and I followed him to the small town of Riverwood as the innkeeper, many travelers had passed through, and sure enough one had, I crept into the room at dawn, hoping to catch him. As he was about to rest, he was gone, his few possessions left behind in a dinky in room. It was a break in his pattern. He always fled the scene with his possessions tidying his sleeping area. This time. The room is a mess, except for one carefully folded up paper right on the center of the bed, and I take it, this single piece of paper is very important? See for yourself a black hand and we know who knows what, what is this? Another scary in a shadowy organization, ever hear of the Dark Brotherhood? The dark brotherhood, the assassins, the ones who murder in the name of some sort of some perverse deity. I that'd be them. Glad you're familiar with them. And voluntary weight is my town under attack by not just vampires, but vampires operating under the rule of the dark brotherhood. Yes, yes, that's about the gist of it, by the Divines. The dark brotherhood has always been more open to those afflicted with vampirism, but Voltaire's cunning courtship and ruthless calculus served him well in that order, he quickly rose up the ranks to an officer's level or whatever, The dark brotherhood council officers. But why is he here? Why does he attack my people? I actually doubt Volterra has ever stepped foot near your village. These vampire attacks have fallen victim to his disciples, fledglings. Your town is a buffet for vampires in the midst of growing pains. How do you know if it was built, these attacks would not be as well known? There would be doubt as a vampire attacks. A possibility that wolves or wandering feet lead to your people's deaths. This what your people have been suffering from young vampires. Foolish vampires who lack the wisdom and cunning of a master but flocked to him for guidance or a feeding ground for them. Why hasn't Voltaire dealt with these insolent young lanes. Then why should he care if anything? When they go out and kill a few of your people, They're easier to deal with when they're back in whatever hideout they reside in all full and warm with blood. So we stop it by killing Voltaire. If only it were that simple, We can't kill him if we can't find him. So we take one of these while the young vampires capture them. When they come near the village to attack, force them to tell us where Volterra lies and kill him as if you had read my own mind. The Lair four chapter of the Dark Brotherhood is nothing to be trifled with. We will need help and we know their location. We need to enlist the help of others. Even between the two of us, we are no match. I'll give you whomever from. Our militia is willing to fight and we can reach out to shade and hall for access to their garrison. We may owe them some, but it will be worth it good. Now. We must prepare your town as best we can. Not so much to ward off the vampire trap one. What do we need fire as much of it as possible? Some light is best, but any light causes him great pain and chant as many swords and arrows to bear fire or wood and oil and helping. There's another vampire. It's broken at Patricia's house. It's not my first vampire I've slain. We won't try and capture this one. Capture how? I think we need more time. We aren't ready. Let's save your people. It'll buy us time to plan. All right now. I can fetch us a torch. No need ready. I am ready. Fear not Sheriff. If you can't wait for, don bring the don yourself. Thank you for listening to level up.
