The girl hesitates but finally tries mommy. The lack of enthusiasm in her voice makes the boy spin around again and glare at her with a force that actually causes the girl to flinch. She starts again. Hi. But she already feels a lump working its way up her throat. It's like she's barely there at all. Sometimes home is the loneliest when everyone's here. Well, she thinks in the quietest, most secret way she ever could everyone, but daddy, mom looks around for a little longer when her gaze locks on the two Children, it muddies even more like she sees what they are but isn't quite sure how they've gotten into her house. Then she smiles sheepishly. Oh, hi. Um, hi. Her hand is over her face and she laughs into it. Oh, no. Wait, wait, wait there at first thinking she's talking to herself. The boy continues down the stairs but she is flapping her hand and the voice gets louder and louder as she runs away toward her room. So he quickly backtracks and does, as she says, the sound of water running in the back corner of the house is followed by such a long silence that he starts thinking, maybe she forgot them and fell asleep. She did look tired. He exchanges a few looks with the girl who is as confused as he, but much less patient and is beginning to squirm a bit. He pokes her lightly in the ribs and she jumps. Then gives him a look of pure childish outrage and sticks out her tongue. He starts to grin a little, then wipes all expression from his face as mom lurches back into the entryway made up and in new clothes, but looking no more refreshed than when she first came in. So she begins smoothing down her new chocolate brown hair with one hand. What do you think? The girl opens her mouth to answer that? She likes it because she does. But mom is looking at the boy, not her and he speaks up faster. Really, really, really mom. He struggles. The girl's head nods along but she's chewing her lip. Mom gives him a funny look that keeps getting funnier and the girl holds her breath again. Then the look goes away and she grins at them. Well, ok. Who wants mcdonald's? And then there are grins all around.
