There is a photo of me aged eight or nine, but who am I kidding? I know what age I wass. It's not black and white, but almost because it's night pitch dark with banks of snow lit by the flash. And the only thing vaguely of colour is me. Brown limbed, half kneeling on a snowdrift. My back to the camera. I am naked, apart from my white knickers because of a bet my uncle has dared me to roll down the hill in the snow with no clothes on on. The knickers are a concession. It's Christmas in the eighties, and my uncle is home from Canada with his miserable wife and two daughters. You can't see my face, but I'm sure I am shocked by the seer of wet snow on my shins. On about how the luminous drifts are so quickly swallowed up by the dark, I rolled down the hill anyway, on I'm sure I scrambled back into the sitting room and over to the fire, gasping and grinning. I'm sure I was handed a towel and got my seven sided coin. I'm sure I was the hero of the hour. My cousins could have been jealous, but they weren't. Maybe they knew what was to come. Maybe that's why they wind. My uncle was there for a week. There was before on there was after there is a photo of me aged eight and 3/4. You can't see my face or my uncle's face or his intent, just the black snow into which I am about to tumble. Clueless blind.
