just got back from visiting my mom, who now resides in a long term care home. She's been there about a year. It was one of the hardest things I ever had to do, given my whole career was working on keeping older adults active and healthy in their own community. So the thought of my own mom having to go into a long term care home was devastating to me. But my mind was closed. I was not seeing how much at risk she was around me with. Every day I would see her declining a little more and a little more. Her dementia was getting worse as well as her mobility. Then there was the all hall moment. She had a full and even though I had a camera to be able to see her at a distance and even though she was steady on her feet, we thought, and even though we had services coming in and out of the house all day long, it was not enough to keep my mom safe. It was tough for me to realize that she would be better in a care facility. Much to my surprise, my mom is thriving there. She has integrated with a lot of the rather residents and see has her routine and her structure that she enjoys. So the moral of this story is I was the one with the closed mind.
