Greek mythology was huge, complicated and often contradictory. There were many very different versions of most stories. There were perhaps 1000 named gods, goddesses, spirits, monsters, Demi gods, heroes, legends, mythical tribes and mythical animals, plus thousands of unnamed ones. Most of the God like figures were associate ID with natural phenomena, emotions, concepts or human traits. The gods often had signs, symbols and animals that were associated with them. The supernatural world was alive. To the Greeks, as alive is the human world. With this vast array of mythical beings and stories, the Greeks described much more of the world's behavior and also the human condition. Their depictions were so accurate that in modern times we keep going back to them for words, concepts and ideas that they defined thousands of years ago.
