tonight was the night. Nico Young ran the fastest mile ever recorded in the N au Skydome. This comes just five days after Sarah Hall set a new women's american record in the half marathon and what do they both have in common? They both live and train in Flagstaff. Arizona Not only that, but olympic bronze medalist molly Seidel is a Flagstaff resident. The man who ran the fastest marathon ever by an American in 20458 Ryan Hall, who, after taking a break from road running, turned himself into the incredible Hulk. Also a Flagstaff resident. And this goes beyond road running. The man who holds the course record for the Super Bowl of trail races, the Western States, 100 mile endurance run is you guessed it? A Flagstaff resident. Jim Walmsley can run 100 miles on rough terrain in 14 hours, nine minutes and 28 seconds. Walmsley also holds the rim to rim to rim fastest known time at the Grand Canyon. Yes, he ran from the south kaibab Trailhead to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, up to the north kaibab trailhead turned around and came back all in five hours, 55 minutes and 20 seconds. So why do all these elite runners flock to Flagstaff or why does northern Arizona breed elite runners? It has a bit to do with elevation. Flagstaff is 7000 ft above sea level. If you want to be a great runner, you need efficient lungs and a strong heart Yet I'd be a fool to get too caught up on the science behind it all. See what I really, truly believe is. It has a lot to do with community, as coach, Mike says on any given day or night in Flagstaff, he can find somebody who's faster than you. As a community. We come together to push each other towards greatness, Flagstaff.
