the door remains shut, but her husband appeared next to us. I shall never forget his face. He was deathly pale, hair moved on his head as if he electrified. He was shaking as if from a fever, said nothing, gasped and smiled. Eliza and I stood as if petrified. He grabbed us both by the hands. His face twisted, his cheeks turned crimson. His eyes glowed and he gazed at us silently. I felt as if his eyes emitted. A fiery blood red ray of light. Magical force stripped me of all movement. I could not flinch or look away from the terrible gaze, the expression on his face, groom or enraged By the moment, his eyes shone brighter and his face turned redder, was really fire smouldering within his nerves. His hand burned mine a moment longer, and he shone like white hot metal. ELISA screamed furniture, started shaking. Bluish flame rushed up the dead man's limbs. His bones became outlined in white. In the midst of the blood red glow, Eliza's dress caught fire. I tried in vain to pull her hand from that vengeful grasp. The dead man's eyes followed her every movement and see it her. His face turned ashen in colour, his hair turned white and shrivelled and only his lips cut across his face like a crimson band and smiled cunningly. The flames spread with incredible speed over the drapes, flowers and paintings. The ceiling flared up and thick smoke filled the entire room. Children, Children, ELISA screamed desperately. He'll die with us, the dead man replied with a loud laugh. I cannot recall what happened to me. After that hot, acrid stench suffocated me and forced me to close my eyes, I heard as if in a dream, people screams and crackling of the house falling apart. I do not know how I pulled my hand out of the dead man's. I felt free, and some animal instinct made me dash this way and that to avoid the crashing beams. At that moment, I saw a kind of white cloud before me appeared closer and saw Sophia's face flickering within it. She was smiling at me, sadly, and beckoning me. I followed her despite myself. Wherever that vision went, the flames fell away and fresh, fragrant air revived my breath. I kept going and going. Finally, I found myself in my room I could not pull myself together for some time. I did not know whether I was asleep or not. I looked down at myself. My clothes were not smouldering. There was a black spot on my hand. The sight of it shocked my every nerve, and I passed out once again. When I came to, I was in bed, unable to speak a single word. Thank God the crisis is over. There's hope, someone said next to me. I recognised Dr Bin's voice, and I tried to say a few words, but my tongue refused to move. After a few long days of complete silence, my first words were, How is ELISA? Fine, Fine. Thank God she is well and sends her greetings. I used up my strength to ask the question, but the doctor's answer reassured me. I was recovering. My acquaintances started visiting me once when I was staring at my hand, trying to remember the meaning of the black spot upon it, I was startled by the count's name mentioned by one of the visitors. I listened closer but could not follow the conversation. What happened to the count? I asked, rising from my pillow. Yes, you used to visit him, too, didn't you? My acquaintance replied. Haven't you heard what happened to him? Fate. On New Year's Eve, he was playing cards at a friend's house. He was uncommonly lucky and brought home a tremendous sum of money. But imagine there was a fire at his house that night. Everything burned down the count himself, his wife, Children, the house, everything to the ground.
