our decision to turn the tables and give fans of science fiction the opportunity to create their own Top 10 list rather than choosing the film's ourselves was, in one word, something unique. We created a survey that gave fans the chance to argue, discuss and come up with their choices. Had we actually chosen the film's ourselves, the top 10 list would have been quite different. We might have included some of our favorites, like Alphaville 1965. The War of the Worlds, 1953. The Time Machine, 1960 The Rocky Horror Picture Show 1975. Or The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai Across the Eighth Dimension 1984. But then, the final selection would have been a reflection of our own egos and not the choices that really science fiction fans had made. In discussions with members of the world science fiction community, we were surprised by the hugely favorable response we received. They love the idea of being involved in a survey to find out what they thought about the top science fiction films. Subsequent discussions helped us to refine our survey so that we could obtain the best possible sampling group that would represent a true cross section of all science fiction fans. In order to make the survey worthwhile and statistically relevant, we needed thousands of fans to participate, according to sociologist and statistician Diane Miller. Black would we also needed to get the ranking form of the top 10 science fiction films linked toe websites that fans frequented linked toe blog's they trusted, embedded in online science fiction magazines and distributed in mass mail outs and progress reports for conventions that science fiction fans attended. As a result of our discussions and hundreds of email messages and phone calls, we set out at the 60th World Science Fiction Convention in San Jose Con Jose 2002 to create a system for the members of the world science fiction community to cast their ballots. We then made a list of the top science fiction and comic book conventions and booked travel arrangements to attend our attempt to poll. The largest number of science fiction fans in the world lead the two of us on a 10 year odyssey, crisscrossing the globe in an effort to give every fan a chance to cast their ballots like Odysseus or the crew of the discovery, we became obsessed with our quest. We attended every manner of science fiction and comic book convention, from small 300 person gatherings in cities like Baltimore in Chicago to the large mega conventions like Dragon Con, with its 70,000 attendees in the New York Comic Con, with its 115,000 members to the great mecca of SciFi fans worldwide, the San Diego comic con, with its 150,000 plus members and attendance, we also harnessed the power of the Internet and reached out to a worldwide network of bloggers and SciFi websites. Wherever people spoke the language of science fiction, we had our ranking form there. The results of our poll were phenomenal as we received or collected thousands of entries from fans living in all parts of the world. With hundreds of films listed, they voted and made their voices heard by selecting their favorites. Some of the top films were familiar ones, while some others were quite controversial. That post mortem sessions that we've held at the World Science Fiction Convention in Toronto, Dragon Con in Atlanta and the San Diego Comic Convention. Thousands of fans have crammed huge ballrooms and stood sometimes for more than an hour at the microphone to have their voices heard and to voice their opinions. Every fan who has attended those sessions felt they wanted to respond to the top 10 list they had voted on. Some agreed to the final results, and others disagreed with certain choices. Still others offered alternatives and personal favorites. Every one of them felt they had something important to say, but more importantly, they knew that we were there to listen to what they had to say.
