Nathaniel wasn't a religious person, but he always enjoyed walking past the old church on Third Street. The stained glass windows and the contrasting architecture to the other boxy buildings broke the monotony of his stroll and broke it in a way that was pleasing to gaze upon. Occasionally he'd see an older man outside, sweeping the entryway or washing the windows or retrieving the mail. They spoke whenever they met, but to this day, Nathaniel didn't know the man's name nor his purpose. It could be that that is God himself, maintaining his house. But Nathaniel thought it was more likely that he was a priest or at least a janitor. On this day, the man was pulling weeds from the grass trim around the building. Morning, Nathaniel greeted pleasantly. The old man dusted his hands upon an apron and turned his head with a large happy smile and a blessed morning to you. He returned with a nod, but then he was back to pulling weeds again. Are those not one of God's creations? Nathaniel asked as he continued to stride past without looking up. The old man grunted and ripped another out by the roots. All of God's creations have their place, and the place for these things is not here. Nathaniel glanced up in his favorite of the stained glass windows, colorful picture of a bunch of robed men. They were probably important people in the church. But Nathaniel, just like the picture they inspired, and before long he was too far away to experience it further. But that's okay. He'll see it again when he walked back the other way.
