It was 1937 and Amelia Earhart was about to try to do something no one had ever done before. She had already broken many records as a famous aviator. Now she wanted to be the first woman to fly around the world. Amelia hadn't always loved flying. She was born in 1897 and didn't see a plane until she was 10. It was covered in rust and partially made of wood. She didn't think it looked very exciting. She'd much rather play sports or catch frogs than fly. By the time Amelia grew up and graduated high school, World War One had started, she visited Canada and saw many wounded soldiers returning home. She wanted to help them. So she became a nurse's aide at a military hospital. While in Canada, Amelia visited a stunt flying exhibition. One pilot wanted to play a prank on her, he dove his plane towards her, he thought she would run away. But Amelia stood her ground. She wasn't scared, she thought it was exciting. Amelia fell in love with the idea of flying. She finally got to go up in an airplane for the first time in 1920 10 minutes in the air was enough for her to know aviation was for her. She saved up money, took flight lessons and bought her first plane. Six months later, she named it the Canary.
