warming up and cooling down before and after an exercise session is something we all know we should be doing yet. Very few people give it the time and attention that it deserves. Many. Don't warm up at all, simply throwing themselves into the thick of their workout. You might be able to get away with that sort of recklessness in your teens or your twenties, but certainly not in your 40s or beyond. Unless you ingrain the habit of gradually increasing your body's readiness for exercise, you will suffer the consequences. Just think of what happens when you go to start your car on a cold frosty morning. Don't you let it warm up for a minute or two before you take it out on the highway. Doing so will allow its engine to run more efficiently. You too will operate more efficiently when you warm up before exercise. When you're in a non exercise state, around 20% of your body's total blood volume is contained in the muscles, with the balance being in our organs.
