as the Empire of Japan continued to consolidate its expanding position within Asia, Japanese propaganda would justify the country's conquests, describing their aggression as a desire to unify all the Asian peoples under a common cause. It was a convenient lie meant to convince their anxious neighbors that they desired peace and freedom from Western influence, known as the Greater East Asia Co. Prosperity Sphere. As a diplomatic tool, it provided a rationale for the bloody swath they continued to draw throughout the continent. The desire for freedom from Western colonialism provided the most enticing incentive to accept Japanese indoctrination. Asian countries, long seeking their own paths to power, had continued to feel shackled to foreign influence in the early 20th century. This sentiment had manifested itself in China as the boxer rebellion in 18 99 as well as the Russo Japanese War in 1904 Both nations had taken defiant stands against European encroachment, though only the Japanese would find success in their conflicts. Their victory in war realized their ambitions of empire and hegemonic power in Asia, inspiring the nation to seek greater glory. They were destined in their eyes to rule the continent. China as Japan's greatest competitors had the capacity to fulfill this role as well, though internal conflict left it divided and weak. Chiang Kai shek's nationalist campaign to reunify the country, however, began to pose a threat to Japanese dreams of supremacy. Its economic capacity made it a vital target, and with its conquest, the rest of Asia would follow. In the face of international consternation, however, a greater casus belli would be needed to justify Japanese aggression. In addition to manufactured threats and overt hostility, the Greater East Asia Co Prosperity sphere would serve as the dishonest moral righteousness that would legitimize their claims to the continent.
