pulmonary arterial hypertension, or PAH, is a chronic and progressive vascular disease that affects the arteries of the lungs. Currently, there are an estimated 2.3 cases per 1,000,000 population in the United States. Though many treatments are becoming available to patients, the cause of PAH is still unknown. Patients living with PAH are impacted by body pain, decreased vital function, shortness of breath, mental health decline and difficulty fitting into social roles. Pathologic remodeling of the pulmonary vascular bed occurs due to increased resistance arteries that carry blood to the lungs, thinking over time, narrowing the vascular Lumen, leading to diminished blood flow. Plexiform lesions develop, destroying small pulmonary arteries and arterials. Another consequence of PAH is decreased right ventricular function, which can lead to right ventricular failure and ultimately, death.
