how to read an explanation of benefits. A visit to the doctor is often followed by two important pieces of communication. Your explanation of benefits also referred to as an E. O. B. And a final bill from your physician or hospital. If you receive a bill after a health care visit but you did not receive an E. O. B. Call your care provided to ensure they have your correct insurance information. While both documents present an amount you owe, your E. O. B. Is not a bill. However, understanding your E. O. B. Will help determine who you need to pay and how much. Let's learn how to read an E. O. Be an explanation of benefits is a statement from your health insurance plan outlining the total charges for your visit, how much your health plan has paid for each service and your responsibility. Your explanation of benefits will have three sections. One summary of charges. The summary of charges shows the bill your health care provider sent to your insurance company for your care to plan accumulation. The plan accumulation states the amount of money you have paid to date for health care services which include your deductible coinsurance and out of pocket maximum met three claim details. The claim details section will include the services you received date they were performed charges for the claim and items such as the full amount billed by your provider or health plan. You may also see an amount for services that your benefits plan did not cover. The discount amount shows savings received from your insurance if applicable and allowed amount is the maximum charge allowed determined by your benefit plan. The deductible amount is the allowed amount that applies to your deductible. The patient's responsibility is the final amount you may owe for your care. This amount should be confirmed when you receive your final bill. Always keep your explanation of benefits from a claim in a safe place until your final bill arrives and compare your E. O. B. To your final bill. If the old amounts do not match, this likely means there has been an error in your bill and you should call your provider now you know.
