for the National Speakers Association. This is Tooley coming to you on the NSA podcast network today. I'm going to talk about my own winter workshop session entitled Practical Podcasting for professional Speakers reaching Virtual Audiences with your business message. I'm presenting my session on Saturday, February 14th from 8:30 a.m. To 10 by way of introduction. I'm a technology expert and educator, and I teach entrepreneurs. And small business is how to make the most of the technology they already have and make smart choices when it's time to upgrade. Some of you may remember me as the chairperson for the recent NSA technology lab. It's been a pleasure to interview other workshop presenters for Endesa, and I've certainly learned a lot about the process of recording, editing, producing and delivering these podcasts. I'm going to share with you what I've learned both through this process and in podcasting. For my own business. A podcast is simply an audio file with a message as speakers. Podcasting is a natural choice for us because we use our voices. We talk for a living, so if you can compose a message in record it, you've got a podcast. Now to do podcasting. Well, there's more preparation required, and that's what we'll talk about in this session. Like any good story, you need to know the who, what, when, where, why and how of podcasting. And that's how I've set up this presentation. It'll be a hands on how to step by step description of what you need to create and deliver. A podcast were using the do it yourself approach because it will give you an opportunity to learn exactly how to create your own podcasts and save money while doing them. In fact, I'm bringing along the recording equipment I'm using right now so you can inspect it first hand. A podcast is just another form of content, like a newsletter or an email or a speech. It's something you want to do regularly so that you can attract listeners or, more accurately, subscribers. So that means you need to plan your podcast content just like you plan your monthly newsletters and email campaigns. In this session, I'm going to spend a fair amount of time on the content planning aspect of podcasting because I think that's why many podcasters give up after a while. They don't think of their podcasts as content that requires planning and scheduling so they run out of gas too quickly. Podcasts don't have to be very long to be helpful. In fact, they can be a short as three minutes or as long as 40 minutes. What really determines an effective length is the attention span of your listeners. As with any content you create, you need to keep in mind your target audience. How much time will they be willing to spend listening to your ideas? Will they be listening on their iPods on the way to work or during their lunch break, or while they vacuum the living room? Or will your podcasts be so packed with information that they can't multi task while they listen? Put yourself in their place and make some decisions. I can say that a consistent length is the most important choice you can make if your subscribers know that they can't multi task while they listen, but that you're only going to talk to them for about 10 minutes, then you've got a reasonable combination that will help you keep your subscribers. Podcasting is a lot of fun. You can be creative both in what you say and how you say it. You can include theme music known as front and back music, to add your personal brand to the podcasts. Podcasting is also a great starting point for information products such as recorded tele seminars, audiobooks and even Internet radio shows. In this session, we're going to focus more on the actual step by step production of a podcast. But I will have ideas, re sources and links to broadcasting services that you can utilize when you're ready to take your podcasts to the next level. I hope that this short podcast has inspired you to attend my session and learn more about podcasting. We're gonna have a lot of fun as we open up a new way for you to communicate your business message for the NSA podcast network. This is too. Thanks for listening.
