Derek Stalin's deserved to die as a lawman. I didn't believe in vigilante justice, but screwing with my family had me second guessing that creed. I wanted to show him some good old fashioned payback hanging him from a tree and watching him struggle for breath as the life siphoned out of him seemed like the perfect end to his miserable life, tossing back a shot of whiskey. I thought about the worth of his life versus what was good for my family. The low life piece of cow dung was squat on the totem pole. The crux of the matter is, he was supposed to be dead already after almost getting my brother's wife killed last year, which fortunately didn't leave her with any other scars than the fear of the event. The ******* had gone silent for months. Life was back to normal and the Dixon ranch until six months ago. Now, there was no doubt in my mind who was responsible for the catastrophe that took two of our ranch hands lives two days prior to the fire of our largest barn. The horses have been released by what would look to an outsider is faulty latches, Stalin's had pulled that trick the last time he came into town. So I knew this was not a coincidence. We've had all those changed because of his idiocy. He'd stayed under the radar of the FBI and even our cousin's former Navy seals hadn't been able to keep him off the land. We'd fought that raging inferno of the barn for hours and finally brought it under control, putting two of our men in the ground had me seeing red and I wasn't sure how to believe that the legal system would make him pay when they couldn't even bend the arson on Derek. I had my resignation letter typed up and all it needed was my signature. Part of me was ready to hand over the job of sheriff to someone who deserved that title, but I could still opt to do the right thing. The anger was eating me up inside. It was my job to protect. And I hadn't even been able to safeguard my family. Enough is enough. The time has come to stop this son of a ***** once and for all.
