CFP board first adopted a fiduciary duty in 2007 when it issued revised standard stating that a CFP professional owes to the client a fiduciary duty when providing financial planning or material elements of financial planning. CFP Board defined a fiduciary as one who acts in utmost good faith in a manner he or she reasonably believes to be in the best interests of the client. The updated codes and standards expands the application of the fiduciary duty to all financial advice, which has a much broader scope than financial planning. The Code and Standards defines financial planning as a collaborative process that helps maximize the client's potential for meeting life goals through financial advice that integrates relevant elements of the client's personal and financial circumstances.
