We were no more than three years, five minutes into the game when my worst fears were realized, struck hard in the face by a high speed flying ball. I was down for the count. My nerves were frazzled. I had to sit out and fight back the tears. But a shocking realization slowly dawned on me. I defended the goal even though I didn't really mean to put my face in front of the ball. That shot didn't make it in because of me. So I stayed out until my hands stopped shaking and then got right back in the game. For the next two hours, I gradually got a little more comfortable. I still made my share of rookie mistakes, but pretty quickly I started looking up and trying to find a friendly player to pass the ball to rather than just frantically trying to get the ball away from me As soon as it came near, I got a little more aggressive in going after the ball, too, and there were even a few times where I was rewarded with a congratulatory shout of nice play D short for defense. After the game, I got out the handheld recorder again. Can I talk to you for my Do you mind being on a podcast? No. Oh, this is my first time playing hockey. To use your first time? Yes. How do you feel after the end of the game? Um, I'm tired. I'm sweaty. My left shin feels a little sore cause the direct hit there. I wasn't the only one who was tired, and neither was I the only one injured, but I did get kudos.
