This was the ninth day of September 18 60 as we came up the hill and turned down towards Snake River again. We came in full side of the Indians who were singing their war songs and their shrill war, who I can never forget. It was too terrible to even attempt to describe. But suffice it to say that although so many years have elapsed since that awful, awful scene, I can never hear a shrill yell without shrinking with much the feelings which I experienced as that terrible noise reached our ears.
