a reading from the novel The Concert Conspiracy by K. D. Schmitz Pro Lock. December 21st 18 28. Close to midnight just outside the gates of Midway Cemetery, Midway, Georgia Tonight, Dr Aaron Pennington will draw his final breath. I will make certain of it. I'm almost ready, but the sleeps coming down thicker. Now he'll have a tougher time. Reaching has been through the storm than I did, and his Rone is not nearly as sure footed as Nero, My big chestnut, as if he heard his name of my thoughts near old nudges my shoulder than nuzzles my neck, my cheek. His hot breath melts, the ice flex stuck to my collar. Encoding my lashes. I lead him several feet into the trees and hook is halted to a sapling. I don't want him winning toe, warn Erin. Ice crunches under my boots and challenges my footing as I feel my way back. Careful not to snag my rope on their ragged forest floor around me. Bushes whip frantically and slowed my progress. I must hurry. The timing is critical, but my focus remains fixed. And at last I am ready. My grip tightens on the sodden rope nodded through my fingers, and I stretch a top and low across the sleep covered quagmire that used to be the road to town. I fastened one end of the rope to the massive graveyard gates and the other secure around the trunk of a victory. Black gum. I think a flash confuses me. Lightning in winter. How odd but helpful. Very helpful. For an instant. It illuminates my trap, but that's enough time. I can see that it's perfect.
