how a differential works. think about wheels which are completing a turn. the outside wheel has to travel further than the inside wheel, which means that the outside wheel has to rotate faster than the inside wheel. if a solid shaft connected these wheels, the wheels would have to slip to accomplish the turn. so it all comes down to physics. wheels receive power from the engine via the drive shaft. the differential takes the power from the drive shaft and splits it allowing the wheels to turn at different speeds.
