don't think about chocolate. You probably know that if you are told not to think about something, it becomes almost impossible not to think about that thing. If I say to you, don't think about pink elephants. You may waste some time thinking about pink elephants, but it won't affect how healthy your life is or what happens to your weight. But what if you tell yourself not to think about chocolate or whatever your vice food of choices? Then it becomes much more difficult to avoid eating it. Professor Daniel Wagner reports on some experiments he and his team conducted on thought suppression in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. In a first experiment, subjects verbalising the stream of consciousness for a five minute period were asked to try not to think of a white bear but to bring a bell in case they did, as indicated both by mentions and by bell rings, they were unable to suppress the thought as instructed on being asked after the suppression task to think about the white bear for a five minute period. These subjects showed significantly more tokens have thought about the bear than its subjects, who were asked to think about a white bear from the outset. These observations suggested attempted thought. Suppression has paradoxical effects as a self control strategy, perhaps even producing the very obsession or preoccupation that it is directed against. So that's the paradox. Being determined not to think about something means you are more likely to think about that thing. If you decide not to think about the food or drink you really like, but want to reduce or avoid completely, you are more likely to think about it in an unhealthy way. The forbidden temptation. The last hack showed us anyway, that deliberately and purposefully thinking about something highly calorific means you are likely to eat less of it anyway.
