Chapter 10 Quantitative research designs Learning objectives. On completion of this chapter, you'll be prepared to summarize criteria for exploratory, descriptive and explanatory research studies distinguished between the types of internal and external validity and threats to each scene in experimental designs. Distinguish among true quasi and pre experimental designs. Compare and contrast five types of non experimental designs. Introduction. Do you travel? Do you cook? If so, you probably use plans and recipes. These plans and recipes provide guidelines that help you have a great travel outcome, visiting the places you wanted to see or cook a delicious meal with all the ingredients included in their correct amounts. This chapter introduces the concept of research design, which is the outline or plan for a research study. The choice of a research design concerns the overall intended plan and outcome for this study. It is concerned with the type of data that will be collected and the means used to obtain the needed data. For example, the researcher might decide if the study will try to determine positive factors, explore relationships or examine historical data. The design is not concerned with the specific data collection methods, such as questionnaires or interviews. But with the overall plan for data gathering and analyzing the data obtained, the design must be appropriate to test the study hypothesis or answer the research question. General guidelines for critiquing a quantitative design are presented at the end of this chapter.
