This is John Rogers reading for Onley Human. The creature approaching my coffee table was something like a human woman crossed with an insect just for laughs. It had an oddly curvy, muddy, reddish brown carapace, long legs that were disturbingly shapely on Lee to arms. But they terminated in sharp, handy, fingering things with claws on the ends instead of marshmallows or feathers like I would have preferred. And the head was slightly insect oId a bit freaky, But the face was nicer than, say, wheeze ease. A bunch of antenna swept back from its crown and an imitation of braided hair, which admittedly suited the alien. Most of the rest of its body was covered by a dull metallic dress. The fact that I was intensely glad off, and in fairness to its sense of style, it had accessorized rather well a few colorful Bangles decorated one arm along with a thick matching necklace. Best of all, it hadn't tried to eat me alive yet, so I had that going for me. Still, I hoped that it had already eaten breakfast. It must be a shock. It clicked at me compassionately. The voice was odd, somehow feminine and not as threatening as expected. I relaxed by the tiniest of fractions. I Yeah. Ah was all I could manage to say. The alien recognized my discomfort, no doubt helped by my less than subtle reactions as well as its own subtitles. It stopped midway to the couch. Don't be alarmed. It said Easy for it to say Neutral expression. My name is Nick Socratic. Titles are That was a mouthful. Uh, I don't think I can repeat that. Not that I mean, it's a nice name. I I just don't think that I have the mouth parts to make all those sounds myself. Yeah, no offense. The aliens seemed to take this in stride. None taken. Can I just call you Nixa? I asked hoping that my suggestion wasn't offensive. All my previous experience had been with humans, most of whom tended to get offended quite easily. I decided not to sit precious, probably didn't care or understand what my attitude implied. If it did, it gave no outward sign. The slicks addressed me. Just a zai reached the table. You again, human. You must need something from me. But I don't yet know why you would think that it was a good idea to ask. Unsure of which I toe look at, I addressed its mouths. Yeah, about that I was. I was kind of hoping that you'd be able to help me out. Pushed Purcell its tentacles. You're experiencing cognitive dissidence. What now? It waved a few tentacles toward the exit. There's the problem with humans. Your brain capacity hasn't caught up to reality. Your limited mind understands that there's a gap between what you think should be happening and what is actually happening. But it rejects the obvious conclusion because the only question the human brain is capable of asking is, What about me? You should be thinking about how you might benefit society instead of focusing on your own pitiful needs. I countered. You call this crap hole of society? Are you talking about all the captives out there? None of us asked for this, and I don't get why the slicks do it. Freshest rolled a few of its eyes. This is tiresome. Your discomfort arises from the belief that what you want individually should stand paramount. What is good for everyone? You have only lived in this city for a short time, but All you have managed to do so far is drained precious resources and lower the morale of your fellow citizens. You don't need to waste time asking a lot of stupid questions and moping around thinking that everything is unfair. Make something of yourself human.
