desert bighorn sheep have long been part of the natural and cultural heritage of Sonora, Mexico. Currently, there are approximately 3200 free ranging desert bighorns in 27 mountain ranges within the state. But there is still a great deal of vacant habitat that could potentially support many more. Unfortunately, some of these areas have not seen desert bighorn sheep in decades, and a number of challenges must be overcome before bighorns could be successfully reintroduced.
