It's no secret that incarceration is often a degrading and dehumanizing experience. Overall conditions are not conducive to rehabilitation, let alone building a healthy and productive approach to life. In preparation for release, research shows that education is vital to improving the prospects of incarcerated individuals as well as their families and communities. Education reduces recidivism enhances employment opportunities and positively impacts earnings. In 1994, Congress passed a bill that banned people in prison from having access to federal student aid in the form of Pell grants, in December of 2020. That ban was finally lifted. Advocates for prison reform are celebrating this win, but there is quite a bit of work to be done to ensure the integrity, quality and availability of academic programs in prisons. We'll be taking a look at programs that have proven to work well and the strategies that have made them successful.
