Part one. Chapter 1. I pulled my horse to a stop on the steep rise and stood tall in the saddle for the few extra inches of view. An ancient gnarled tree stood sentinel at the peak. Sheer cliffs surrounded me. Pines covered the hillside until they were gradually replaced by quaking aspen yellow leaves shimmering in the slight breeze. It was the line of smoke trailing into the sky on the far side of the valley that interested me the most. My horse stamped and pot at the ground like she knew there was a stable with fresh hey. Within view she was game. That's for sure. I don't know how she was still standing
