summer in America, the hottest season of the year. As summer sweeps the nation. It's make or break time for wildlife, when animals must seize nature's bounty For the young, it's the time to spread their wings. But the learning curve can be steep and dangerous. Summer could be the time to fight for a mate or die trying. Each year, the ebb and flow of the seasons transforms the country and all of its wildlife. This is the wild American year, the solstice. Our planet has traveled millions of miles through its orbit to reach this point. Now the sun fully embraces the Northern Hemisphere as the Earth's axis tilts it towards the stars, radiant warmth and light. It's June 21st the longest day of the year and the first day of summer June in the Great Smoky Mountains that straddle the border between North Carolina and Tennessee. In summer, high humidity traps vapor released by the lush vegetation, it creates a smoky haze that gives these mountains its name, and it's a theory of beauty. As night falls, there's more magic to come. It's showtime for the creature that symbolizes the start of summer in America. The Firefly. This male has one mission to accomplish in the last few weeks of his life. Find a mate to turn on the females. He's got to turn on the lights, but he's not the only one out to impress the ladies. Thousands of other meals are busy trying to outshine the competition. This female has flown to some nearby foliage to catch the show. She shows interest by flashing back, using a specialized Oregon under her abdomen that emits light. The male joins her, one of many females **** mate with before his time is up. In a few weeks, the dance of late will come to an end, but summer is just getting started.
