arch bridges achieved their curved form by transferring weight horizontally to the abutments, materials compressed together to form the arch and become a single unit. The Mendota Road bridges a limestone arch bridge perched on the banks of the Mississippi River across from downtown Saint Paul. It was constructed in 18 94 by the city of ST Paul's engineering office and was originally used as a roadway until 2015. Today, it is used as a pedestrian trail over an outlet of Pickerel Lake. The Mendota Road Bridge is notable as a rare example of a small scale 19th century stone arch highway bridge. Stewart Creek Bridge is a stone masonry arch bridge. It's constructed of locally quarried ghabra rock, a commonly used building material in the Duluth area. The bridge was built around 1925 and was designed as part of the Bargains peak segment of scenic Boulevard now known as Skyline Parkway, which runs for almost 30 miles along the crest of a high ridge overlooking Duluth and Lake Superior.
