at the 11th hour, Chester London was staring at the clock on the wall. It was five to midnight and then five minutes, everything would be over. He was going to lose his job. He was at the bar, working on his seventh drink, and after two weeks of hard and exhausting work, he had finally given up. Chester worked for a Japanese multinational company, Soon Oyama, in Montreal. He was a young, ambitious junior manager, rising quickly up the corporate ladder. He worked very hard to please his superiors. Until now, he had been doing just fine. Two weeks earlier, his boss, Mr Samata, entrusted him with a very important task. The company urgently needed a new spokesperson. Recently, they had been under media scrutiny. Mr. Shamoto believed that a new spokesperson was exactly what the company needed. A new spokesperson must be a young, assertive, good looking woman who has a degree in law economics, said Mr Samata, with a loud and authoritative voice. Her English and French must be impeccable. You have exactly two weeks to find somebody you must call me and give me the name before the midnight on the 23rd. Otherwise, start looking for another job. Have I made myself clear? Chester had interviewed 77 candidates but hadn't found anybody is suitable. He needed more time. But Mr Shamoto was not the kind of person you bargain with. Chester felt suddenly dizzy. He needed to go to the restroom and go quickly. He needed to splash some cold water on his face, so he got up from his stool and her towards the door. But when he got to the men's room, it was locked. He leaned against the door and felt like he was going to faint any minute. He pounded on the door three times very hard. Is anybody there? He shouted. Levin Rouge replied, a woman's voice, giggling. Chester was suddenly completely sober. He had heard this somewhere before. It reminded him of something, but he couldn't place it. He didn't know why, but suddenly it was very important to him to remember. His head pounded. Then it came to him. It was 20 years ago. In the early eighties, he was in Abitibi to miss common ***. He could see his parent's house in the high gardens fence that separated them from their neighborhood. His parents didn't get along well with their neighbors. One day, seven year old Chester pounded on the fence and shouted, Is there anybody there loving? Lose? Replied a girl's voice. What's the queen of hearts doing in our neighbour's garden? Asked the boy waiting for you. She's going to eat you alive, replied the girl and started to giggle. Shantel Chester, remember the girl? She was the most wonderful girl he had ever known. While their parents were arguing they would secretly play together, she taught him French, and because of that, he got a job at some Oyama. He often thought about her. He remembered the last time they had seen each other on saying goodbye. She handed him a card to remember her. It was the queen of hearts. Keep it with you, Ari's. It will bring you good luck, she wrote on it. Suddenly it all made sense. What's the queen of hearts doing in our neighbour's garden? Said Chester. Immediately, the door swung open. Jester, a young woman shouted happily and jumped into his arms after they calm town. Chest rest. What are you doing here? He was astonished to realize that Shanta was cleaning the men's room. I am looking for the job here in Montreal. In the meantime, I took this. There was nothingness for me. Chester looked at his watch. It was 11. 59. He still had one minute. He pulled the cell phone from his jacket pocket and quickly dialed his bosses number. Mr. Simona, I have just found your girl. Her name is Shawn. Tell Barry you couldn't find anybody any better. Are you crazy, Chester? Do you know what time it is? Well, you said I had till midnight. Reply. Chester, please. Your Mr Shamoto yarn in. I was just joking. I thought you Canadians knew how to take a joke. You have as much time as you need. We need somebody really exceptional. You Japanese have a strange sense of humor, said Chester and laughed out loud. Chester looked at the clock on the wall. It was exactly midnight. It was a new day. He took Chantal into his arms
