Hobbit Voices

Are you needing a voice that can take you there and back again? A hobbit voice can be whimsical, chipper and inquisitive. Maybe you're looking for a quaint, humble hobbit voice that's never left The Shire or maybe you're searching for a burly, big bellied hobbit voice that can belt out a hearty chuckle. If you need a hobbit voice, you'll be able to find it here.

The hobbit is a shorter, friendly and peaceful creature. Hobbits are usually unadventurous, preferring to stay in the comfort of their own homes, however they can be brave when need be. The hobbits enjoy simplicity, and are often farmers. They also enjoy parties, visiting with friends and family, and eating and sleeping. The hobbit is very laid back, and has a joyous attitude, often cracking jokes. Hobbits are friendly to humans, and are often considered shorter humans. Some hobbits are shy when it comes to new people, however, just as they are shy in their attitude towards adventures.

Hobbits are portrayed in J.R.R. Tolkien’s works, specifically The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Other authors, directors and video game designers may use the term “halfling” to describe the hobbit type character. In both trilogies, hobbits as a collective are shown as peaceful folk who do not like change or the unknown. Regarding specific characters, Bilbo Baggins decides he does want to go on an adventure, and becomes more confident in his abilities. Similarly, Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippen become more loyal, courageous, adventurous and selfless on their mission. There are also some less friendly hobbits, such as is the case with Smeagle, more commonly known as Gollum, who became isolated and corrupted. These hobbits are rare but much less friendly.

When voicing a hobbit, much of their character is dependent on the situation the hobbit is written into. The average hobbit will be more shy and prefer comfort to adventure. A hobbit who goes on an adventure will be more curious and determined to complete their mission. A corrupted hobbit may be angry, violent and have a madness to them. Concerning hobbits, voicing them is best understood over tea and a second breakfast.

Related to the hobbit is the dwarf who is a short, subterranean creature, who is often a miner, a smith or a craftsman. The dwarf can be a boisterous creature, which sings, parties, drinks and enjoys being around other dwarves. Dwarves have a love of precious metals and gemstones, perhaps being perceived as greedy at times. Dwarves are usually male, although there are also female dwarves.

The dwarf may speak differently to different characters it encounters. In many works of fantasy fiction, the dwarves are on uneasy terms with elves, and on hostile terms with goblins and other evil characters. When talking to an elf, a dwarf may sound suspicious, and speak as little as possible or otherwise keep communication to a minimum. When talking to a goblin, the dwarf may be openly hostile, especially in a conflict. Dwarves value kinship, and are very friendly to one another, showing respect and brotherhood. When talking to men, they are relatively neutral, perhaps more friendly depending on the story written.

Dwarves have appeared in many works of fiction in the modern era, with an appearance in the Disney film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, with each dwarf embodying a different attribute. More recent depictions of dwarves occur in the film adaptations of Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, directed by Peter Jackson, being a central focus in the former trilogy. Tolkien’s dwarves have inspired many other depictions of dwarves in fantasy, so watching those movies provides an accurate starting point in voicing a short, long bearded dwarf.
