After receiving and reading nearly 90 entries for the contest calling for reviews of audio recording equipment and software, we’ve finally found a winner!
Suffice to say, you’re hearing from one very tired yet informed blogger! I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many reviews on so many different pieces of equipment and it’s no secret that our peeps love their gear.
Who won the contest?

My Amazing Mogami Gold Cable
By C.C. Heim
Is it weird to be in love with a mic cable? If so, I am officially weird.
About a month ago I acquired a Mogami Gold cable. I had been upgrading my home studio and wanted to get equipment that would make me sound like (and thus earn) a million bucks.
New computer. Check
New microphone costing four figures. Check
New pop filter. Check
New mic cable. Check! Check! Check!
The reason I’m in love with this mic cable is because it makes a significant difference in my noise floor – reducing it to nearly silent.
Like many VO pros I know, my “home studio” is more like a corner of a room. I live in a suburban neighborhood complete with laughing children, frequent lawn mowing, and trucks whizzing by to deliver any number of goods my neighbors obtained online. I’ve always done everything in my power to minimize noise in my studio, but just could not get rid of a low level of hum in my recordings. Once I switched out my old mic cable for the Mogami Gold, I noticed a really huge difference. Sort of like if you’ve only ever drank sludge water out of a mucky pond, and were presented with a bottle of pure spring water from melting Himalayan peaks.
Now, I’m not too much of a technical type, but I can tell you that my noise floor dropped a lot, from about -45db to under -60db. This change is really noticeable and gives my audio a lovely crisp sound. I notice it most when I need to insert silence in a recording. In the past, if I were to insert silence there would be a very noticeable difference in the silence against the existing audio. I would then go through a number of noise reduction techniques in Adobe Audition to do my best to clean up the noise floor. Those manipulations would often leave my audio sounding strange. With the Mogami Gold cable, the only noise my mic picks up is the sweet sound of my voice. I have no need to apply noise reduction at all.
For 70 dollars I can’t think of a better investment in my ability to provide my clients with crystal clear, clean audio. If anyone ever tries to separate me from my Mogami Gold, they’ll have to pry it from my cold, dead hands!
Congratulations to C.C. Heim and thank you to everyone who submitted their entries and reviews. I’m so impressed by all the reviews we received and am eager to fulfill my promise of posting your reviews and sharing them through our Voices.com social media channels.
In the coming days, you’ll see some updates regarding the new blog your reviews will be posted on. David and I have been working on this now for a week or so and are looking forward to sharing this valuable resource with you.
Thank you again to all who participated!
