This is a test reading for Kurt Locklear for his book called Splintered. My Name is Pam Cosell. Today is january 16th 2019. The Wrangler sat on relatively dry cots and said a large tent John sat on an empty nail keg. They had swaddled themselves in dry blankets pulled from a cover barrel. They shivered, though at least they were out of the rain. Paul sat in a corner, still reliving the episode in which he and his friends could have died. He agonised over how he should word the document the officer requested been carved it a hangnail with a knife. Suarez struggled with the bloody torn fabric of his shirt, where the bullet had grazed the meat of his arm. Occasionally, he dogged the moon with a wet kerchief. Gustav had spread juniper thresh thick over the muddy ground to make a suitable rug. Two lanterns glowed on stools in opposite corners. The man shoot on strips of dried beef, pickles and wheat bread and sipped ale from the town tavern. Paul looked up to see. Each of the men were deep in their thoughts, having come so close to being killed and then almost being imprisoned. Paul himself felt undone, and his body shook not from the cold but from realizing how close he had come to dying on Lee. Ben had not faced imminent death. Paul shook his head for Ben seemed oblivious as he took to whistling a tune. The water is wide above the 10 for pitons from the dry goods store in Fort Smith Town, Gustaf announced, and I am four privates to set it up for a nickel apiece purchased the barrel of blankets and the courts from a better lemon in a wagon on the street. He was drunk, so any price I offered was agreeable to him. He offered me ******* or two, but I turned him down. Her face could stop a clock. I do have my standards. He twisted his mustache. Flores and Stew snickered. You did well purchasing this 10 Gustav Paul said. All of you have your pay now. He glanced around at his friends. Our labors, my international band of misfits are done. It's been a pleasure working with you, a Frenchman, a Mexican and stew. Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you have some German in you? Stew nodded and Polish and Dutch. And for Oh Mi amigo, Horacek chimed in more just for shooting those bad men. Mori, Mollo hombres You want a good shot? See? Well, I was aiming to shoot the skinny one in his derriere, but Gustav beat me to it. The men's initial sneakers turned into laughter stew the most Paul appreciated. Qatar is lightening the mood there. Day had been harrowing and was grateful for the reprieve. He looked out to 10 flat, but a clearing of the rain clouds Onley. Drizzle fell. He stood tomorrow, US to Scotsman. Bren and me are putting our money in the bank in town. I encourage you to do the same. I selected a good horse for John. Once he's safely on his way, Ben and I are enlisting. The rest of you are welcome to join, too. If we don't commit now, the worst likely to be over and at any time in the future, if someone asks, you will be able to say we did our part stew or is in, Gustaf gave got grunts of approval. Why do you want to do that? John said, his voice tired and sorrowful, and nothing gonna happen in the world but a whole lot of men dying The Wranglers eyes widened. Ain't no man gonna be died. I said the whole bunch of Yankees been responded. John Chicken's head. I know about war. There was a war in our county Between two families were took to fume No. 11 They all died except one And what he had to live for his kid folks did his enemy family did. He got on his horse one day and rode away. A No one heard him since only Ben wagged his head. Well, that ain't going to be the way this is here this here war one Confederate can whip a dozen Yankees Deep silence to Paul. Each of the Wranglers appeared to retreat into his own world, one apart from their current situation. He looked at the dark skinned man sitting across from him. He observed the man smooth features his balding scalp on the skin shone showing and the skin tone showing through the threadbare clothes. John was a sweat as any of them. He had worked as hard and at that moment seemed a great deal. Wiser Paul reflected on how John and say stews life pulled aces, body out of the quicksand and by his quick thinking and skillful shooting, saved the lives of the lot of them. He wondered. Did John draw the gun as a do or die fight against being thrown back into slavery or for, ah, heartfelt desire to save them all? He would never know the answer, but he still admire John Coin Kind immensely. You know, John, Paul finally said, You make a lot of sense, but sometimes a man's got to stand for something not just for staying alive, but be able to look its friends in the eye and say, Yeah, I did my part. I didn't hide because I wanted to live. I hope you understand that John made no answer, but looked piercingly into Paul's eyes. Or makes no, never mind what the doctor thinks, been said full of his own **** and vinegar. He'd make a pitiful soldier anyway. For me, Horace said, I go home to Mexico. I miss my Siniora. She missed me, too. I bet he looked pensively out the open flap of the tent. The rain had abated in a few stars twinkled in the clearing sky. You have to drive bandage around his arm wound and tied it off. Oh, person joining the Army, Gustav said. I think I'll go to Canada. I have family there. I'm not much interested in war. I'm grateful for this drive I showed with Although you. He grinned Wells to smiled. You know, Are we going to take him in my side anyway? So we'll see if I can find a ranch hand or farm to work on, who knows, pull into the lanterns and blew out the flames? Can I, Gentlemen? He spread his body out of his cot and put his hand over his head. Each of the others followed his lead and fell quickly to slumber, except for Ben, who kept mumbling curses and threats enough to cover all Yankees in general. In the morning, the Wrangler stat naked with blankets about their bodies in the tent while their clothes dried on a line under a hot sun. When the captain, who had accosted them the previous night, came to their tent, accompanied by General McCullough, Paul secured the blanket around his waist and stepped out to explain to the General Theus specks of their fight with the bounty hunters outside the fort. So yeah, the wherewithal to kill some Yankee spies, General Maccaulich said, and saved us the trouble of a trial. I like your stand to give in. In fact, I noticed your live. You'll be of no use in a heart fight, either to the infantry, all much to the calorie. And I need an additional student even want it. I'll make you a Lieutenant. Help me run my affairs. Can you write middle and fair? Yes, sir. I can write Clean a readable Paul room. Describe a beard. What doe ideo When your clothes are dry enough to wear, find this captain and he'll take care of getting you signed up and getting you a uniform. I need you and headquarters by this afternoon. Don't worry. You'll be busier than any other man in this army. Paul grinned. Dressed and dry clothes call deposited Benz and his silver in the Fort Smith Town Bank. He went to the horse corral and chose a sorrel gelding for John. He saddled the horse. I'm lead it by the rains to the 10. John sat on a stump trying a pair of Brogan's Gustav had purchased for him He wore a new pair of pants. And when you saw Paul leading the prancing sonority horse, he sprang up and raced to meet him. You don't mean you give me a horse and let me go. Yes, Mr Cohen. Coin Paul said Slater, the white band slave of a colored woman. Expert shot lifesaver. Good. Not just good, but really damn good man. Yes, The horse is yours. I bought some parchment from one of the sellers and rode out this order that says you're a free man. I think it looks official. So if you pretend it is if anyone s he handed Jonah folded paper. John opened it and looked at the pen strokes. He merely nodded that. Be good for me. Do you know where you're headed, John? Tell hard being with then? I don't know. Stay away from towns If you can go around, move like you've got a purpose. When you pass people by, don't look afraid. And I'd ride fast as I could until you get to Illinois. In fact, there's a whole passel of Southern sympathizers in the south part of Illinois, so keep head north and east. That's when you'll find Ohio, he had to John a new rifle and a cartridge box. With 20 rounds, Gustav passed Jonah Haver sack, a rolled blanket and a stack of cornmeal stews. Take a cook pan, hard tack waivers and a tin of lard in a saddlebag. Koras came up last. This is my best rope. I want you to own it, Me amigo. He hung the Larian on the saddle horn. Jon shook all their hands. Where's then? He asked. Oh, I said to monitor. And Paul replied, I'll tell me. Say goodbye now get on your way before I change my mind and making join the Confederate army with then and me. The writers chuckled. The idea so tickled ghost off that he bent over laughing John about it is steamed, looking proud. So I was really a free man as free as you'll ever be, Paul said. I was gonna follow the drinking, gored north. John turned the gelding and cantered it out onto the Butterfield stage road. And thanks for everything you did for us. Paulson, though he knew John could not hear him under his breath, he said, And thanks for making me a better man. He holds for good things for John, but considered that he may not get far before another band of bounty hunters trapped him. Now he had to worry that his ruse about the dead bounty hunters was not found out. His spectacles had fog, so I took them off and wipe them clean. That's the end of the rating. This is Pam Costel, January 16th Austin, Texas Rating splintered.
