Hey everyone thanks so much for joining me here on the catching passes with coach john Kirby podcast presented by Bet online, here on the Believe network and listen up for one minute at about our new sponsor that online. Mhm So last episode, we talked all about the beginning of my time at U. H. Mono uh and all the amazing parts that go along, you know, with a full ride. Now let's talk about some of the real good times. Let's call this episode charity work and party time post game. One of the parts that go along with playing football in Hawaii was that we were always in the public eye, we served as role models because there was no proteins there and were treated like the 49 ers, you know, would be in SAN Francisco, two hugely famous things in Hawaii, our volleyball and congratulations to the men's volleyball team for winning the national championship this year. Women's volleyball and football. We're always offered to do charity work and not many dudes did it, but I would go every time. I always felt that I was so lucky and bless so I should give back every chance I get. So I did a few hospital visits. But there was one time, I will always remember we went over to a young man's house, let's call him Mikey for the sake of the broadcast who was suffering from cancer and close to death and he just wanted to meet some uhh football players before it was his time to go. I always felt so honored by that request because I was just a normal dude from san Matteo. But now I can make a difference in this young man's comfort and happiness before death. You know, thinking of that was always one of the reasons why football is so special to me. This opportunity in Hawaii led to this chance for me to help this young man. So you know, I really thought about Mikey for a couple days after the visit but then I started to carry on with my life, you know wrapped up with football and all the fun. But a few months after the visit, my coach came up to me after practice and handed me a card. It was a card from the mother of Mikey. Mikey had passed a few days after our visit. But she thanked me for my visit to their house in my jersey and the next part that she wrote just got me man, I'm sorry if I get emotional. She wrote thank you for getting so close to Mikey and hugging him and sitting with your arm around him. Some of your teammates were hesitant to get close because of the way Mikey looked in the state he was in being so close to death. But the intimacy you showed Mikey was exactly what he needed before he passed for. A couple of days after the U. H. Football player visits, I would ask him who his favorite football player was And because he couldn't speak, he would always point to 87. That letter always meant the world to me and I still have it. And with that letter there's a picture of me with my arm around Mikey. So to Mikey and his family, thank you for allowing me the honor to help your son. And it's because of this interaction that I became a teacher and coach for over 15 years and I continue that work to this day. Mikey was the first kid I helped. So it's a Mikey's mom. Your son's death wasn't in vain. I will continue my work with young people as long as I live. So mike you can smile down on each kid. I help 87 still has his arm around you. Mikey bed online. Whoa man, that was tough and that was heavy. But let's lighten the mood a little and sorry to be a little Debbie downer. That story was important. It meant a lot to me and I was happy to share it. Let's get to the stuff you don't really hear about when it comes to college sports. You always hear about the stats and game and stuff. But what about after the game, let's call it post game celebrations. And somehow my dorm room in building I 753 became the party spot in the first few weeks of the season. I mean it must be because I had a couple of city teammates, his roommates, they all knew where the coolest dudes out there. So for some reason after we beat Minnesota, the first game on tv on ESPN. At home, there was a party at my house. A group of, one of my friends came over and met another pack and they brought people and all of a sudden it was 70 people and probably like a 300 square foot dorm room. But it was so much fun because from there on out, our place became the place to hang out after games. So now let's talk about this girl on campus. Let's call her Kalia for the sake of the broadcast. She was the most beautiful, exotic Hawaiian woman I have ever seen everywhere she went. People stared and she had like this Hawaiian girl wolfpack with her at all times like and what was cool about them is every time they walk by, each girl smelled like a different Hawaiian flower or exotic flower. It's set Scalia when she would walk by, she would always smell like freshly cut bloom areas and you know what I realized after our big party in week one, if we beat cal state Northridge and weak to looks like the dorm room is going to be party central again somehow. I guess Scalia heard about this and her little wolf pack and I saw her in our main area, you know in the front where we used to all hang out. Well listen, I look over and Kalia locks eyes with me and starts walking towards me with her mean girls packed close behind. I heard a couple of my teammates say, oh damn curves come to talk to you. And as Scalia walked, if I was to put what it looked like into music, it would probably sound a little like this. Kallio walked right up to me. The smell of fresh plum areas instantly filled the air. I had to call her shirt on and she grabbed the top button, spinning it and said whole Kirby, I hear you're having one party this weekend after we win, can my friends and I come over to your party and with my game like laser focus, amazing poise and composure. I said uh sure and part of the reason I was speechless was that Kalia let go of the top button on my shirt and was making circles with her finger on my chest as she awaited my answer. After I responded to Kalia with such grace, she said, okay, Kirby see you on saturday and walked away a few steps. Her eyes still locked with mine. The wolf pack filled in their spots as they departed with each member of the pack smelling like a different tropical flower, insane by Kirby by Kirby by Kirby in three completely different tones. All right. The stage was set. All we had to do is when The game on Saturday came and went, we beat cal state northridge to go to an 02 and a record looks like it was party time in the dorm room and Scalia was coming this time that week we were given a scouting report with, I believe a picture of one of cal state Northridge is star linebackers. I believe his name was bowl and he was on the front of the scouting report with a picture of his face in a target crossed out. Now if our coaches did that, you know, we all figured out that this is a guy that could probably make a difference in the game and our coaches told us he was a little bit of a dirty player and to watch out for him. But ultimately we didn't let him, we sailed to big victory that night to start the season two and no and man Aloha Stadium was rocking that night. You could feel the energy even after the game throughout the whole state. We all got dressed and we're headed take the bus back to campus when bull, their star linebacker approached a group of us in the parking lot and said, yo nice game fellas, where's the party at tonight? I gave them directions to my spot and we headed back to campus. I got back to my dorm room which was closed and there was literally people waiting outside in the hallway to get in like a ride at Disneyland or something And I opened the door and that amazingly fun, unforgettable night began at about 12 AM. The Northridge Party as I call it is one I'll never forget. I met so many people that night that are still my friends to this day hanging out talking story as they say in hawaii and then the big moment came Scalia and the pack arrived, Scalia walked in and the extremely packed party carted like the red sea, the DJ, scratch your record and it was like this Talia walked right up to me. Blue Maria sent it as always and said thanks Kirby for letting us come over and since I had already talked to her earlier in the week and we won the game. I was filled with a newfound confidence and replied, uh, no problem. The next funny twist came about one a.m. with and knock at the door. I opened it and believe it or not, it's bowl. The dude, we stared at all week on our scouting report with the target, crossed out through his face all week long. Not only did he show up to my party, he came alone. Of course we welcomed him with open arms. He was a cool dude down to earth football player, just like us, same mindset And he hung out with that still about six a.m. And then headed back to his hotel to catch a 12 PM flight back to Northridge. But the real highlight of the night besides the wind and meeting bull was that eventually I relaxed and talk to Kalia most of the night and one of my best memories was watching the sun come up with Scalia and the wolf pack and as we sat talked and laughed until about nine a.m. I realized that night after talking to Talia that she was a really cool young lady but not even close to my type and we like completely different things but remain good friends throughout college. Can you believe that after all of that so many thanks to Calais and the wolf pack for them, fun memories they provided in many post game celebrations after that and thanks to Bull for being a good dude for hanging out with us and being a worthy opponent. The following week we lost at home to Wyoming back quite a lot of points. Party time began at 12 am like always, but was shut down at about one a.m. with a knock at the door. It was campus security and the main officer I knew Wells cool dude. He goes hall Kirby, you lost an eyebrow, You can't have one party, can only do this when you win cousin. And we lost a few more games in a row. So the room and I-753 went silent until we beat Fresno State at home later in the year and played our butts off first. Notre dame on thanksgiving weekend losing by one in the last few seconds as 21 point underdogs and we will definitely feature the Hawaii verse, Notre dame game on thanksgiving weekend in 1997 on another podcast episode as well as the postgame celebration. Mhm So overall, if I could teach you anything, let me say that some of the best memories you will ever make sometimes don't even have anything to do with what you're focused on. For example, I was there to play football, go to school and that was my focus. But I also knew how to enjoy my life to the fullest. Always letting in new experiences which allowed me the opportunity to get the entirely full college experience at the University of Hawaii many go through life and will not stray from their focus, but we'll also miss the good times. Just think of my room didn't become a fun hang out after games as we really allowed it to be in the long run Scalia would have always been on this untouchable pedestal when instead I discovered that she was really cool but not even close to my type. I didn't allow new and sometimes bizarre experiences into my life. We would never have got the chance to meet bolt or ever gave him a chance to show us that he was really just like us memories such as these I consider special and I cherish those moments every single chance that I could and they were my choices. The conversations, the people I met from all over the country, some even from Australia and various other pacific island areas that I never even knew existed. My next door neighbor at one time was even from Alaska. But through school at U. H. I learned that even though we're all from different areas of the world we had more similarities than differences. Especially sharing one common factor. We're all there to get a degree set off into the sunset with that famous piece of paper as we used to call it amongst my teammates. Her make sure you get that piece of paper a college degree. So I really hope you enjoyed here in some of these stories. Just a small sample of life as a U. H. Football player. Many more stories to come in the future episodes And before I go I'd like to leave you with the best advice in two huge life lessons. If you will allow me, number one, always make room for bull in your life and number two always. And I mean always make sure Kalia in the wolfpack are invited.
