As an officer in the American military, the promotion system is up or out. If along the way, you are passed over for promotion twice in any rank, you must resign, you're out along the way you must seek and be successful in certain billets that allow you to demonstrate your fitness for the ultimate position within the military structure command. The squadron had lost four aircraft and two pilots in the last four or five months. The most recent crash was just a week ago on Thursday, the first of May, the aircraft impacted the ground on the west side of a drainage ditch, ricocheting off the ground still at full power and slid right through the open doors of the H and MS squadron's enormous hangar. It continued through the hangar and exited out the far door into a parking lot where it continued gathering up about 20 cars before coming to a halt. Astonishingly not a soul was hurt except the pilot who was killed most likely on impact with the ground. General. This is major spicer. The general didn't respond. He just gave me a look that seemed to penetrate right through me. It was almost as if I wasn't there. He looked down at some papers he had in front of him. I need a new manager in the worst way. And when I started asking around your name kept popping up, that squadron has lost four aircraft and killed two pilots in the last six months. There's a little pimp captain down there that's been allowed to run that squadron and the son of a ***** has run it into the dirt. So based on your reputation, I'm going to put you in and I expect quick results. But if you drop one aircraft have an accident, an incident, some other type of trouble, you're not going to like what appears on your fitness report and you'll be done. Is that clear? Yes, sir. It was abundantly clear. I was stepping into a big bowl of ****. This would be a defining moment in my career as a marine officer, these young men were hardly ever a problem molding them into an attack. Pilot. Fighting machine was not only interesting but fun. However, there's always an exception to the rule. I was sitting in my office catching up on some paperwork and enjoying the view of beautiful weather out my window. When a young officer appeared in my doorway, dressed in a flight jacket and flight suit, he seemed very nervous, which for most lieutenants coming into a CEO S office for the first time would be understandable, but his nervousness was different. It had what I would describe as a little helter skelter quality to it. Is that name on your flight jacket? Nametag the same as on your flight suit. Name tag? Yes, sir. It is. He pulled the flight jacket open. So I would see the nametag. Shaky. Is that your call sign? Yes, sir. That's what they started calling me in 203. Well, Lieutenant Nalls, before you come back, you get some new name tags made. Have them say Lieutenant Nalls us MC. I will not have a pilot that wants to be called shaky intercepting the Bear at AC OS briefing with the ship's intelligence personnel and the MA U commander, Colonel White, we learned that we were fast approaching an area that us ships would be overflown by Russian bears. The bear was the nickname NATO forces used for the Tule Tu 95. It was a very large long range bomber often used for over ocean reconnaissance with a range of 9000 miles. It was well suited for such duties. It was huge with a wingspan of 100 54 ft and four engines similar to our B 52. I'd only seen pictures. I got the call from the ship's departure control. Shank one comport to a heading 015 bogey with two escorts range 30 miles altitude estimated at 1500. Shank one. Roger break gallow gho Buster upon intercept and relief use Fox mic for all calms acknowledge. It was a strange feeling to be here somewhere in the mid North Atlantic looking at a real no **** Russian aircraft. It was an exhilarating and yet very lonely feeling. What if something did go wrong? How wrong could it go?
