This was never the easiest part of Scotland to pin down, as the plural borders perhaps suggests in the West. For a while, these were the debatable lands. The historical reality wasn't quite that sedate, however grieving. Raiding back and forth across the border was a way of life for centuries. Today, by contrast, all is calm and quiet, a tranquillity perhaps typified by Abbotsford, the romantic home of Sir Walter Scott. This region of historic boroughs of enchanting rolling hills and rocky coastlines with a tweet snaking through, gives little of its turbulent past away, except in its picturesque ruins, such as that of Melrose Abbey.
