the final version of Journey Beyond the Stars before the title was changed to 2001 A Space Odyssey featured a whole segment in which Dave Bowman comes face to face with very thin eight foot tall extraterrestrials. In the screenplay draft astronauts Dave Bowman and Peter Whitehead take their separate pods and descend upon a slot like tunnel on the far side of Jupiter's fifth moon. Bowman pilots his pod through the tunnel and finds that he is going through an enormous cosmic switching station that sends him millions of light years to another part of the galaxy in a manner of seconds on the other side. As he emerges from the tunnel, he spots the wreckage of a gigantic spaceship and sees another slot like tunnel. He reasons that its crew must have been heading for the tunnel when it crashed. He heads toward its opening. Moments later, Bowman finds himself in another place that is characterized by binary suns, and he approaches a Saturn like world with silvery rings. He descends on this world, and soon the inhabitants are visible to him as he sails over their heads in his pod, they appear to be humanoid in appearance with two arms and two legs and stand up right but move with a graceful, flowing motion that makes Earth men seem awkward by comparison. They're also eight feet tall and very slender. Omen continues his dissent, taking note of their vehicles and buildings. He even passes over a playground where he imagines the extraterrestrial Children are playing. One of them appears to shoot some kind of toy Reagan at Bowman's pod, but he is past them before he has time to sweat. Eventually, he is directed to another tunnel and emerges in a huge Washington hotel room where his pod comes to rest. The room resembles one. He may have slept in on Earth, and he makes himself comfortable. Bowman falls asleep on Lee to be awakened by a telephone call. Good evening, Mr Bowman, says a voice. You have adapted yourself well, both mentally and physically. You are correct in having no fear. You will not be harmed, nor will you suffer any discomfort. You will be returned to your world without any ill effects within a reasonable period of time. He is directed to go through the hotel room door and walks into a white void where his alien benefactors air waiting for him
