In mid August 2000, the pride of the Russian Navy, the nuclear submarine Kursk was engaged in naval warfare exercises in the barren sea off the coast of Murmansk. The crew was preparing to launch a practice torpedo when a mysterious explosion sent the KSK to the bottom. 95 crewmen died instantly but 23 survived for several hours in a small compartment until the oxygen ran out. This is their story.
