Once green forests are filled with red dying trees and patches of gray dead ones. The culprit, an epidemic of bark beetle infestation is decimating forests throughout the west which could lead to more catastrophic wildfires. It just stands to reason that if you have more dead trees from bark beetles, you have a more dangerous wildfire. However, a new study from the University of Colorado Boulder calls into question this conventional wisdom research indicates that wildfires burn equally in both live and dead forests and that bark fetal infestation may not be as significant a factor as once thought, rather, drought and climate change are more influential.
