When the front came to a standstill, both sides hardened their positions. Fighting raged days soon turned to weeks and weeks dragged in the months. It seemed each victory yielded to defeat and in turn each defeat spawned victory. The cycle continued without end in this burn and blackened hellscape. Only the depths of the trenches seemed to change forever increasing town down into cold earth. His man and machine made desperate attempt for survival. Time surely must have stopped. We were caught fast in the maelstrom of war endlessly circling the great black unknown. What intractable malevolent force pull us slowly yet so inevitably ever closer to the darkness. Our iron will at the outset rusted away. Ideal is to resolve now, shattered men no longer swaggered and yet no longer coward, bravery, fear both long disappeared alike into the abyss. We were numb beyond all resemblance to humanity. Our one grand and righteous cause for war long since cast aside, forgotten while we fought mattered, little war alone had become our existence. And as one takes breath for life, drink for thirst and sustenance for hunger. So too, we fought on reflex without intention, without cause without hesitation. Relentlessly. We reigned our fires upon the enemy and received in kind with change as a way of appearing when least expected and the sudden change of circumstances brought on by the enemy was upon us, whether we were ready or not.
