It's a cold January in the United Kingdom. Winters here see an increase in starling activity. Resident birds are joined by migrating starlings from across the North Sea, arriving from Belgium or the Netherlands. They sometimes merge with their British counterparts, forming huge flocks or MoMA rations like the ones you see in this film. Witnessing these fast flying birds in such numbers belies the fact that the breeding population in the British Isles has fallen by about 50% in the last 40 years. The reason for this dramatic decline is not fully known, although modern farming practises may be to blame. Where they do find safe refuge, they can be seen in parks or even city centres, but a commonly found roosting in wetlands and reed beds.
