Among the first full scale battles of the civil war was the battle of Carthage. It was the first time in the war that a land engagement lasted a full day following the Missouri compromise of 18 20 Americans began to push west. By 18 42 settlers had made their way to Southwest Missouri and the city of Carthage was founded nestled along the Spring River. Carthage grew and became an important crossroads between Missouri, Arkansas, the Kansas territory and Indian territory. Helen's Barn in Highland, North Carolina was known as the great equalizer.
