The top of the word application shows several items beginning with home. These items are known as tabs. The selected tab is underlined. This is the tab in which you are working, insert design, layout, et cetera, are also tabs. The exception to this is file. File is known as a menu because clicking file will open the backstage to word, in which file and word settings are available. Once a tab is clicked, the icon shown make up what is called the word ribbon or the ribbon icons contained within each tab are known as command buttons. Command button actions are immediate, meaning clicking on the command will activate the command. Next to some command buttons are down facing arrows. These downward facing arrows are known as button menus. When clicked button menus open a menu in which more choices are available.
