Some people live one step away from a heart attack or stroke. They depend on carefully selected medications, such as blood thinners to manage their risk. But sometimes health plan practices can undermine their treatment and increase their risk. One such practice is non medical switching. That's where health plans switch stable patients off the medication their doctor prescribed and onto a different drug. That's more profitable for the insurer, but who pays the price patients? According to a recent survey, patients on a blood thinner who were non medically switched, experienced side effects resurfacing symptoms, even heart attack and stroke. About one in five patients stopped treatment altogether. The switch interrupted patients daily lives with patients reporting they couldn't continue their hobbies, couldn't participate in life events and couldn't provide caregiving responsibilities and it exacted an emotional toll. Patients also reported feeling frustrated, anxious, confused, and helpless. The data is clear. Heart patients don't have time for non medical switching.
