no matter how many times he woke up to this view, he never tired of it. His wasn't the largest or most luxurious villa on the storied Isle of Capri, but it had some of the most breathtaking views. Mount Solano Lighthouse, on the very northern tip of the island, was a few 100 yards away from the balcony. On this cool September morning, he could see the endless blue of the two Iranian see the hundreds of tourists who flock to the legendary island every hour on the hour did not have access to this secluded part of the Italian paradise. He could smell and see the baseball sized lemons hanging perilously from the trees in his backyard. He could see the world famous Carthage, a perfume house a mere quarter mile away. He had always loved the intoxicating sense here, no matter what else was happening. In his increasingly complex life, he was a piece Sir Malcolm Tiernan, age 64 but looking considerably younger, was a mass of contradictions. Tall, commanding and elegant, many said he resembled fellow countrymen Jeremy Irons, one of the wealthiest men in the world. He routinely shunned excess others with his vast resources would have spent lavishly on homes, cars, art and, most likely women. True, he had residences in his native England, Costa del Sole in Spain, New York City in this Italian villa. But he was ever careful about how we spend his fortune and how he was perceived in the press. He had no personal social media presence of any kind, almost never gave interviews and often flew incognito on commercial flights. He had no private planes. His favorite car was a vintage Aston Martin DB 40 in perfect condition, the James Bond car, for which private collectors and movie studios had repeatedly offered a kingly sum. Sir Malcolm always refused. He liked the car and, well didn't need the money. He had received a good deal of press coverage years ago when he reluctantly accepted the knighthood from the Queen of England, more Daniel Ludwig and Warren Buffett. He abhorred the attention it brought to both his businesses and his personal life. The gangly boy from the Isle of Wight bought his first stock at age 13 and never looked back, though his empire had grown to include real estate, insurance, art galleries, sports teams, restaurants, olive oil companies and wineries, to name a few his favorite and the part that was both the oldest and the one over which he exerted the most direct control was the investment company MRT Capital Short for Malcolm Roger Tiernan MRT was one of the most important contributors to Tiernan internationals. Bottom line. But there were problems as he stood on his balcony that morning on Capri, sipping dark Italian coffee and puffing lightly on a Cohiba Cee Lo six. He knew that the oncoming storm was inescapable. Hard decisions would have to be made. Outsize risks would need to be taken. In a few hours, he'd be back at the London offices of MRT Capital, ready to let loose that side of himself, which he, in his natural elegance, preferred to avoid.
