Following the battle of Gettysburg, the national cemetery was dedicated in November, and the keynote speaker was Edward Everett of Massachusetts, the most renowned orator of his day. He spoke from memory, without notes, for two hours. ten minutes after he finished, another speaker rose and delivered a two-minute speech, and Everett's work faded into trivia. That second speaker was Lincoln, and the speech became known as the Gettysburg Address.
