Joseph MacKenzie for Job #209921 Sonnets for Christ the King Ian Russell is THE British voice of the industry. After over one hundred auditions taking place both on and offline, only Ian Russell was able to satisfy our 33 criteria, while the nearest candidate matched only 18. On first hearing, I knew Mr. Russell's voice was the standard against which all others were to be judged. The world has not enjoyed this kind of vocal elegance and refinement since Sir John Gielgud and Ernest Milton. Given a choice between Sir Anthony Hopkins and Ian Russell, I can say that Mr. Russell is much the superior in the purity of and nobility of his English, while the character behind his voice lacks that cynical darkness which is the fatal flaw of the Welsh Shakespeareans. Quite the contrary, Mr. Russell's voice is gracious, affable, and engaging. As for the contract itself, I had given this seasoned actor an impossible task: to record the first significant body of traditional lyric verse to appear in over a century—currently available at MacKenziePoet.com—in the most difficult form imaginable, that of the English sonnet. Experience and history have shown that the sonnet has defeated the finest voices of the stage and, worse yet, that none to this day have mastered the form. Generations of modernism in the English theatre have destroyed the possibility of verse recitation altogether, leaving Mr. Russell with nothing to reference, everything to learn. And yet, through an arduous, uphill journey spanning two very difficult months, Mr. Russell became the very voice of lyric poetry for our time and place through his majestic recordings of my "Sonnets for Christ the King." More than a conquest of the English sonnet's sophisticated structures, Mr. Russell's recordings are a fathoming of profound spiritual depths, a flight of the intellect to daring heights of contemplation—yea, an exploration of heaven itself. Without slavishly highlighting my prosody, Mr. Russell's voice, by its incomparable beauty and euphony, has bestowed upon my verses the crown of immortality. For this precious legacy of song which the great master of voice has bequeathed to generations of listeners to come, I am honoured to express in advance the gratitude of the entire English-speaking world. All good wishes! Joseph Charles MacKenzie, MacKenziePoet.comJan 11, 2017
